In older properties, rising damp is a common issue that results from the lack of damp proofing or in situations where a physical membrane has failed or become “bridged”. Water and salt rise from the ground and pass through the walls through capillary action. Tell-tale signs of this are damp spots and white patches caused by salt deposits.
The issue, however, is that such signs are not always obvious. If missed or ignored, the problem will only worsen, potentially leading to dry and wet rot. The solution is to have new damp proofing installed to prevent any more water from passing through the walls.
If you’ve spotted damage to decorative finishes or any discolouration, Eastleigh customers, waste no time in call Insite (Southern) Ltd. And if you’re unsure, give us a call anyway, as it’s better to be safe than sorry.
We’re the most trusted damp proofing specialists Southampton has to offer. Upon calling us, we’ll arrange a convenient time for one of our damp proofing specialists to visit your property. Upon arrival, they’ll carry out a detailed inspection using specialist equipment. Once the inspection is over, they’ll analyse their findings and put together a report that summarises these findings and outlines a clear course of action.
We’ll recommend proposed remedial treatments along with ancillary building works to put right any damage that’s occurred. The most popular damp proofing treatment is to utilise chemical injections. Our team will drill into the wall at pre-determined depths and intervals. They’ll then pressure-inject using either a stearate or silicone-based chemical or cream.
This type of damp proofing expands quickly throughout the walls, forming an impenetrable barrier that prevents capillary action, locking out moisture. We can employ this system in most situations, such as solid or cavity brick construction. For non-traditional buildings, however, we can provide other damp proofing solutions, such as Wykamol Injection Mortar.
Of course, preventing the moisture from entering the property is only the first half of the battle. Where damp has already entered, deposits of hygroscopic salts are usually left behind. These salts attract moisture. Even with damp proofing in place, these salts can draw moisture from the atmosphere, leading to damp patches remaining.
To prevent this problem, we remove any affected plaster. The plaster is then re-instated using Wykamol Renovating Plaster. We can also re-plaster, incorporating a suitable rendering additive. You’ll receive a detailed re-plastering specification, approved by us, along with the surveyor’s report.
And if your property is suffering the effects of penetrating dampness, speak to Insite (Southern) Ltd today. We can provide a range of options to shield external brickwork from penetrating dampness.
It is estimated that a large percentage of properties in the UK are susceptible to damp. Most vulnerable are older, listed buildings that often lack any sort of modern damp proofing. Without damp proofing, moisture can easily pass through the walls through capillary action. If left unchecked, dry and wet rot can occur, greatly impacting the building structure. Fortunately, here at Insite (Southern) Ltd, we provide damp proofing services for both modern and listed buildings.
We’re the number one remedial specialists; for the last 40+ years, we’ve been the go-to for customers seeking specialist services. Such services include:
Damp is something that should never be taken lightly, and it’s not a problem that’ll eventually disappear on its own. The presence of damp can lead to damage to the property and your possessions. It can also impact your health. You should also consider the likelihood of fungal decay (wet and dry rot) occurring.
Wet rot (Coniophora puteana) is very common but less destructive than dry rot. It’s usually confined to damp sites making it far easier to eradicate. That being said, this task should never be carried out by someone untrained. At Insite (Southern) Ltd, we’re experienced at tackling wet rot. We’ll address the underlying cause and remove and replace any affected timbers. The area and surrounding area will then be treated using fungicidal fluids or pastes.
In the case of dry rot, the situation is a little more complicated. Dry rot (Serpula lacrymans) can spread outward from the damp site at an average of 3.5m per annum. Any building with timber that has a moisture content of 20% or more is at risk. Dry rot spreads through spores that can be carried by air currents, animals, or even humans. The spores settle on unaffected timber and then germinate, with threads (Hyphae) penetrating the wood.
Because dry rot spreads via spores, it can move laterally through a building, making it tough to track down. Our damp proofing team are experts, however, and know just where to look. Not only will we eradicate the rot, but we’ll also put in place damp proofing solutions to prevent the dry rot from ever returning.
With Insite (Southern) Ltd, you can always trust that you’re in safe and capable hands. We undertake a variety of services, such as stone and masonry cleaning together with the application of exterior water repellents and algicides. We also work with selected products from the “Wykamol” range. These are products we know to be effective and environmentally friendly, so you can enjoy complete peace of mind.
We mentioned above working on listed buildings. As a company, our damp proofing specialists are trusted by clients, including:
So, if your property is listed and you suspect damp may have gained a foothold, waste no time in giving Insite (Southern) Ltd a call.
